What is a Lithophane? First invented in France in 1820’s. . Artisans would carve images into wax, and then make a plaster mold of the wax carving. A porcelain slip was then poured into the mold and allowed to dry. Removed from the mold, the porcelain was then fired creating an engraved translucent porcelain artwork. The image appears by light shining through the different thicknesses of the translucent, kiln-fired porcelain; the thicker areas appear darker and the thinner areas appear brighter creating a lovely "sepia" tone 3D image.

Today there is another way of making Lithophanes by carving the image into corian instead of wax, thus bypassing the costly mold making and firing that goes with the porcelain process. DB Artist will take your photographs and create a personal keepsake for you to cherish for years to come.
